Le Quattro Colonne

Santa Maria al Bagno - Nardò

Travelling along the coastal road that connects Santa Maria al Bagno to Gallipoli, it is difficult not to come across the Quattro Colonne, once part of a single fortress listed in sheet 22 of the geographic atlas of the Kingdom of Naples 1788-1812 under the name Torre del Fiume (River Tower) and intended to protect against Saracen invasions. Then, it is not known why, although the most credited hypothesis is that of an earthquake, the central part of the Tower collapsed, sparing the four fortified bastions, hence the name the Four Columns. Today, this important historical monument is the ideal location for various types of ceremonies as it is home to a restaurant. This stretch of coastline is characterised by low cliffs and the crystal-clear blue sea retains an atypical freshness certainly due to the various freshwater currents present. Ideal for snorkelling, but also for a healthy swim, the seabed is the main attraction of Quattro Colonne, so if you are passing by, don"t deny yourself a dip... Have a good summer!
