Mare dei Cavalli is a small free cove with a mixed shore, combining gravelly sand with low rock. It is not a long strip of fine sand like the larger lower-Ionian beaches.
If you want sand, arrive early: the most comfortable area is limited.
Local tradition says residents once brought horses here to wash them. Area guides also associate old cart-wheel marks in consolidated sandstone with this custom.
