Torre dell Orso - Melendugno

Torre dell"Orso is a coastal tower in Salento and is located in the town of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce. We are on the south-eastern side of the Apulian coast bathed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea and Torre dell"Orso rises high from a cliff about 20 metres from the sea. The tower is part of the complex defence system built all along the Salento territory during the 16th century to cope with the continuous incursions of the Turkish pirates that raged the coast in those years. The tower, now reduced to a ruin but operations are underway to restore it, communicated to the south with Torre Sant"Andrea (now completely disappeared) and to the north with Torre Roca Vecchia. Different hypotheses have been formulated regarding the origin of the name, but the most accredited would be that referring to the Urso lords, the tower"s former owners. With a truncated pyramid shape, from the top of its promontory one can enjoy a beautiful panorama with the entire bay of Torre dell"Orso surrounded by the unchallenged blue of a wonderful sea, have a good summer.
