Torre di San Gregorio

San Gregorio - Patú

The Torre di San Gregorio no longer exists today; this coastal tower that gave its name to the seaside resort located in the municipality of Patù, in the region of Apulia, in the province of Lecce was built in the 16th century, during the period of Spanish rule, to defend the coast from the incursions of Saracen pirates; following an unspecified invasion, the tower was almost completely destroyed, and in its place, a villa was subsequently built, which is still visible today, rising from Cape San Gregorio, amidst tall palm trees and a lush pine forest. The Torre San Gregorio communicated to the south with Torre Marchiello and to the north with Torre Vado. The stretch of coastline in question has large areas of cliffs and small coves of golden sand; the crystal-clear blue sea lends itself marvellously to snorkelling and exploring the beautiful seabed. Have a good summer at the San Gregorio marina.
