Torre Sabea

Rivabella - Gallipoli

Torre Sabea is a coastal tower in Salento and is located in the municipality of Gallipoli, Rivabella, in the province of Lecce. Torre Sabea is part of the complex defence system of coastal towers erected during the mid-16th century to defend the Salento coast from the constant incursions of Saracen pirates. This tower rises about 50 metres from the sea and has a truncated pyramid plan with three machicolations on each side and the interior is vaulted. The Torre Sabea communicated to the south with the northern fortifications of Gallipoli and to the south with Torre dell"Alto Lido. During the second part of the 19th century, the tower fell into total decay with the collapse of some walls. In 1975 the tower was entrusted to a private individual who recovered the entire building, restoring it almost completely. Today Torre Sabea appears to us in all its original beauty, surrounded by typical Mediterranean scrub as a testimony to a distant past; from here you can breathe pure air surrounded by unspoilt nature and enjoy a beautiful panorama. If you find yourself passing through Rivabella, perhaps on your way to Gallipoli, stop for a quick hello at Torre Sabea... have a wonderful summer in Salento.
