Torre San Giovanni Marittimo is a 16th-century tower located in the homonymous marina of Torre San Giovanni, a hamlet in the municipality of Ugento in the province of Lecce. The tower rises about 70 metres from the sea to a height of 2 metres and has been transformed into a lighthouse, taking on today the typical appearance of a maritime landmark with its black and white chequered tiles. Torre San Giovanni Marittimo represents one of the many historical testimonies included in the defence and watchtower built during the 16th century around the entire coast of the Salento to cope with the continuous incursions of Saracen pirates who raged the territory in those years. The tower communicated to the south with Torre Mozza and to the north with Torre Sinfonò. Today this beautiful example of a coastal tower soars from the top of its promontory, illuminating the entire coast of the Ugento marina with its beam of light, to the peace of mind of the many fishermen who can avoid tedious shoals and thus navigate in a more comfortable and safer manner. Many greetings from Torre San Giovanni.
