Salento, Torre dell Orso - Melendugno: Torre dell"Orso is a coastal tower in Salento and is located in the town of the same name near the municipality of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce. We are on the southeastern side of the Apulian coast bathed by the waters of the Adriatic Sea, and Torre dell"Orso towers high from a cliff about 20 meters from the sea. The tower is part of the complex defense system built all along the Salento territory during the 16th century to cope with the continuous incursions of the Turkish pirates that raged the coasts in those years. The tower, now reduced to a ruin but operations are nevertheless underway to restore it, communicated to the south with Torre Sant"Andrea (now completely disappeared) and to the north with Torre Roca Vecchia. Different hypotheses are made regarding the origin of the name, but the most accredited would be that referable to the Urso lords, former owners of the tower.
