Torre Sabea

Rivabella - Gallipoli

Torre Sabea is a coastal tower in Salento and is located in the town of Gallipoli, Rivabella locality, in the province of Lecce. Torre Sabea is part of that complex defensive system of coastal towers erected during the mid-16th century to defend the Salento coast from the constant raids of Saracen pirates. This tower stands about 50 meters from the sea and has a truncated-pyramidal plan with three machicolations on each side, and the interior consists of barrel vaults. The Sabea Tower communicated to the south with the northern fortifications of Gallipoli and to the south with Torre dell"Alto Lido. During the second part of the 19th century the tower fell into total decay with the collapse of some of the walls; in 1975 the tower was entrusted to a private individual who recovered the entire building, restoring it almost completely. Today Torre Sabea appears to us in all its original beauty, surrounded by typical Mediterranean scrub as a testimony to a distant past; from here you can breathe pure air surrounded by unspoiled nature and enjoy a beautiful view. If you find yourself passing through Rivabella, perhaps on your way to Gallipoli, feel free to stop for a little greeting at Torre Sabea...have a great summer from the wonderful Salento.
