Torre San Giovanni La Pedata is located along the coast of the Ionian Sea, a few kilometers south of Gallipoli, in the province of Lecce. It is a coastal tower with a truncated pyramid shape, built around the end of the 16th century to protect the coast from pirate attacks. The tower is most likely named after an ancient devotional chapel, while the origin of the term Pedata is unknown. Torre San Giovanni La Pedata was built of local stone, and is characterized by the classic military architecture of the time, with specific tasks aimed at sighting any enemy ships; the tower communicated to the south with Torre Pizzo while to the north with the fortifications of Gallipoli. Today the tower is home to a marine biology station; Torre San Giovanni La Pedata is part of the region"s cultural and historical heritage, representing an important reference point for the history and tradition of Salento.
