Torre San Giovanni Marittimo is a 16th-century tower located in the eponymous marina of Torre San Giovanni, a hamlet of the municipality of Ugento in the province of Lecce. The tower rises about 70 meters from the sea to a height of 2 meters and has been converted into a lighthouse, taking on today the typical appearance of a maritime landmark with its typical black and white checkered tiles. Torre San Giovanni Marittimo represents one of the many historical testimonies inserted in that context of defense and sighting built during the 16th century around the entire coast of Salento to cope with the continuous incursions of Saracen pirates who raged the territory in those years. The tower communicated to the south with Torre Mozza while to the north with Torre Sinfonò; today this beautiful example of a coastal tower soars from the top of its promontory illuminating with its beam the entire coast of the marina of Ugento for the good peace of mind of the many fishermen who can avoid boring shoals and thus navigate in a more comfortable and safer way. Many greetings from Torre San Giovanni.
